The first VFA Premier League gets under way

The VFA Premier League begins today with nine clubs and a single trophy to play for. There is no cup yet, no second competition — one league, played out over the season, and whoever finishes top of it is the first champion this association will have.

Forty matches are scheduled. By the end of them the league will know something it does not know now: who is any good.
